RAND PAUL IN HOT WATER OVER FREEDOM OF SPEECH

Previous Posts

By Neal Boortz

He hasn't been the Republican candidate in Kentucky for one week, and already Rand Paul finds himself in over his comments about private businesses and the Civil Rights Act.

It all started when Paul told a local paper in Kentucky that he supported the Civil Rights Act because it ended public discrimination but ... and this is a big "but" for many Americans ... "I don't like the idea of telling private business owners - I abhor racism, I think it's a bad business decision to ever exclude anyone from your restaurant - but at the same time I do believe in private ownership."

So then Rand Paul goes on MSNBC with Rachel Maddow - whoever in the hell SHE is. Rachel Maddow asks him something based on this interview with the Kentucky paper. She asks: "Do you think that a private business has the right to say, 'We don't serve black people'?"

Paul's response: "Yes."

Well .. there you go. From this point on Paul's opinions and philosophy on the size of government, national debt, economic liberty and self reliance are going to be ignored. It will all be about whether or not Rand Paul and the tea party supporters who propelled him to victory are "racists."

Now .. perhaps it's only fair that I would try to answer the question myself. Let me give it a shot:

"Well, Rachel. That's your name ... Rachel. Right? Well, Rachel .. why don't you ask me if it should be legal for a doctor to walk away from a dying man on the street that he could help? Perhaps you could ask me if it should be legal for a good swimmer to see a drowning child in a pool .. and walk away? The answer to both of those questions would be 'Yes, but it would be morally reprehensible.' The fact is in this day and age you simply aren't going to find businesses who want to turn away customers because they are black, white, Hispanic or otherwise ... not so much because it is against the law, but because .. again .. it would be morally reprehensible. Sure .. .there will be limited exceptions. You might find a black barber shop that simply doesn't want to serve white customers, for instance, but I love America .. and one of the reasons I love this country is because, unlike so many other countries, we look upon all people, citizens or visitors, as being as being equal under our laws. That's the way it is - that's the way it should be."

No ... I'm not available to write speeches for Rand Paul, or to brief him on interviews with moonbats.

Here, though, is how Rand explained his "yes" answer: "I'm not in favor of any discrimination of any form ... But I think what's important about this debate is not written into any specific "gotcha" on this, but asking the question: what about freedom of speech? Should we limit speech from people we find abhorrent? Should we limit racists from speaking?"

OK .. I have the advantage of 40 years of running my pie hole. And no ... I'm not going to run for anything ... except maybe the Royal Scoop store on Vanderbilt like I did last night after dinner.
