Deal in the works

Jamie Dupree was reporting last night (when most normal people were asleep) that the McConnell plan is gaining support and might become a done deal today.  What do we get out of this?  Apparently it deprives Obama of his precious tax increases on the high-achievers.  At least that’s something.  It also creates some cockamamie idea about setting up some sort of a commission to recommend spending cuts.  When those recommendations are made the congress will either vote them up or down without amendments.  Yeah … that really works for the base closing commission.

The truth is that if McConnell gets his ploy enacted the debt ceiling will go up and the pressure to do something definite to cut spending will be gone – and it will be back to business as usual for the Congress.
