Yesterday I gave you some statistics culled from a Newsweek survey, which backed up what I've been telling you for years: Americans are ignorant when it comes to understanding the basics about our government and our history. Today I have a little more information on that, breaking it down by political party. These people were given 10 basic questions required of immigrants to become citizens. What they found was that the ends of the political spectrum are highly engaged and knowledgeable, but there is a large group of Americans in the middle who are members of the dumbmasses.
A solid 70 percent of conservative Republicans passed, followed by 61 percent of GOP moderates and 55 percent of GOP liberals. For Democrats, it was the opposite: liberals and moderates proved better informed, with 62 percent of both groups passing, but just 36 percent of conservative Democrats did so. In other words, conservative Democrats pulled down the numbers for both their ideology and their party, while the centers of both parties were the least engaged.
Also interesting ..
Americans who vote regularly in elections tested above average--68 percent passed--but among the one in 10 who told us they weren't interested in exercising their franchise, just 26 percent would qualify to be citizens of their own country.
So this swath of people "in the middle" are probably the American Idol-watching, People Magazine-reading masses who care more about Charlie Sheen and the latest Black Eyed Peas song then they do about what their elected officials are doing. The elected officials are making decisions that affect your life. Name me one way in which the antics of Charlie Sheen will affect your life or the future for your children ..... didn't think so.
