Yup … here comes another tax.  It’s a tax that will start out as 15 cents on the sale of every live Christmas tree sold in the United States.  Let me tell you how this tax came a bout.

  • Christmas tree growers were starting to lose business to the makers of artificial Christmas trees.  There are various reasons for this, including codes and HOA rules that forbid live Christmas trees in high-rise condominiums.
  • The growers decide that they need to engage in a marketing campaign to promote their product – real Christmas trees.
  • The growers don’t want to pay for the cost of this marketing campaign, so they start lobbying for the government to cover the cost.
  • The Obama Administration, which never saw a tax increase it didn’t like, approved the 15 cents per tree tax.
  • Now the taxpayers will fund a marketing campaign for Christmas tree growers to try to get the taxpayers to buy more Christmas trees.

And so it goes.
