Some of the GOP candidates gathered for a forum .. we’re not going to call it a debate .. in Des Moines, Iowa over the weekend. It was the Presidential Thanksgiving Family Forum, and it was hosted by Frank Luntz. All but two of the GOP candidates showed up – Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman. The discussion was mostly centered on social conservative values, their “world view.”
If you want to watch the debate in its entirety, you can do so here.
Newt Gingrich seemed to be a consistent favorite with the crowd. The one moment from the debate that has permeated the mainstream came when Newt addressed the Occutards. When asked about personal responsibility in society, Newt used the Occutards as an example of the breakdown of personal responsibility in society. He says that the Occutards “start with a premise that we all owe them everything.” Newt went on to say:
They take over a public park they didn’t pay for, to go nearby to use bathrooms they didn’t pay for, to beg for food from places that they don’t want to pay for, to obstruct those who are going to work to pay the taxes to sustain the bathrooms and to sustain the park so that they can self-righteously explain that they are the paragons of virtue to which we owe everything. That is a pretty good symptom of how much the left has collapsed as a moral system in this country. And why you need to reassert something as simple as saying to them, ‘Go get a job. Right after you take a bath.’
It’s no surprise that Newt had a series of other applause lines throughout the forum. For example, when asked about the value that he would most like to re-instill in America, Newt says, "I think it would be that every American understood that we were endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights, and I wouldn't have anybody teaching who felt uncomfortable explaining what the Founding Fathers meant."
Herman Cain also had a successful night. Perhaps the most poignant moment came when Herman told the story of being diagnosed with cancer and his wife, Gloria, telling him “we can do this.”
The fact that is so apparent is that any of these GOP candidates would make a better president than the current hack in the White House. I doubt that any of them believe that America’s greatness comes from government. That, alone, is a big improvement.
