I need to update some of my listeners on the situations with the pigeons on the deck of my Atlanta condo:
When The Queen arrived in Atlanta about 10 days ago she informed me that a flying rat had two baby flying rats in a potted plant on our deck. I got to town a few days later, and sure enough, there they were. The mama pigeon seemed to be taking care of them, so we left them along. About the middle of last week momma disappeared. Two days passed .. then three … and no momma.
I thought about putting a cat on the deck to take care of things, but then it would be a contest as to who I was going to throw over the railing; the cat or the pigeons. So I just let things ride until Saturday afternoon.
So there I am watching the Master’s on the big-screen, when I’m suddenly hit by a wave of guilt over those baby pigeons suffering without there mama just feet away. I make a call to the Chattahoochee Nature Center and ask what to do. They give me the name and number of a federally licensed wildlife rehap person just two miles from my place … I make the number, and she’s home. Good thing --- there’s a limit to my temporary sense of compassion. So I take the baby flying rats over to the bird lady, fill out an “intake form” so the stupid feds will know just where I got these things, handed her a donation for her good work, and headed back to the big-screen.
I did ask the bird lady why all the fuss to save baby pigeons. It’s not like there’s a shortage. She told me that hawks need food too. I liked her immediately.
