This is a buzz word that libs and proggies love to throw around: diversity. I’ve ranted about it for years. Liberals value “diversity” because they like to look at people as members of groups – you are black, you are a lesbian, you are rich, you are handicapped. To a liberal, your individual character is not valued as much as what group you happen to be a part of. But here’s the catch … liberals claim that they love “diversity,” except if you are a member of a group with which they do not agree or does not adhere to their progressive set of values.
Case-in-point: Christians. The latest brouhaha over Chick-fil-a demonstrates the hypocrisy of those who claim to celebrate diversity. I have a specific example for you: Christine Quinn. She is Speaker of the New York City Council. She decided to make it a personal mission to kick out the only Chick-fil-a in NYC, which happens to be located on the campus of Cristina’s alma mater, New York University. Quinn wrote a letter to the president of NYU, demanding that the school cut ties with Chick-fil-a. In the letter she writes .. are you ready for this?
"Let me be clear ‐‐ I do not want establishments in my city that hold such discriminatory views ... We are a city that believes our diversity is our greatest strength and we will fight anything and anyone that runs counter to that."
So apparently Christine Quinn has decided that she is the one who gets to decide what diversity is acceptable and what isn’t. As a group, Christians who do not believe in gay marriage are somehow less valued as a member of her precious “diverse” city.
There’s an easy way for Christine Quinn to make sure that establishments like Chick-fil-a are no longer in her city. It’s a brilliant, ingenious concept. Are you ready for it? Don’t buy chicken sandwiches. That’s it! Let the free market decide whether or not that Chick-fil-a should stay in business. After all, it is a business and the point is to make money. If people don’t eat there, it doesn’t make money and when the contract expires, Chick-fil-a decides it is in its best business interest not to renew. Ta da!
