Smaller Government?

There’s a new poll out showing that most Americans want a smaller federal government.  Bolshoi.  I find this incredibly difficult to believe, considering just four years ago, these same Americans put an unqualified man with no accomplishments like Barack Obama in the White House.  Voting for a Democrat rarely means that someone is concerned about smaller government.  Unfortunately, the same thing might be said for voting Republican.  Just look at how George Bush grew the size of government.

People may think they want a smaller federal government in theory, but the second that you begin to take away their precious government benefits, they whine and kick and scream about their “right” to somebody else’s money.  A social-welfare society and smaller government do not go hand in hand.

Maybe people in 2008 didn’t care so much about the size of government as they do now.  Maybe they didn’t trust John McCain to cut the size of government, considering George Bush’s legacy.  Or perhaps people cared about the size of government, but they cared MORE about how cool it would be to see Barack Obama as president.

Now, there are no excuses.  Sometime this very week, our federal government debt is set to hit an ungodly $16 trillion.  If people are truly concerned about the size of our federal government, there is no way that they could vote for Barack Obama in good conscious.  I guess we will see in November if the voters were serious.

I’m not holding my breath.
