According to a new survey released by the Pew Research Center, a majority of Americans believe that the rich are paying too little in taxes. Wow, there’s a real shocker. It is polls like this that make me feel less certain of a Mitt Romney victory in November. As terrible of a failure as Barack Obama has been he has certainly succeeded in making his people believe that the rich simply aren’t paying “their fair share.” To put it bluntly, Obama has played the Hitler game well … taking an obvious and provable lie and repeating it over and over again to the point where it actually becomes a truth – at least to the uninformed.
This “rich aren’t paying their fair share” lie is music to the ears of people who vote for for one reason and one reason only: To get their hands on somebody else’s money. Who’s money? A rich person. Why? Because those rich bastards are greedy and clearly aren’t paying their fair share … cause Obama says so. The same survey says that 55% of Americans believe that the rich are greedy and a good amount of people believe them to be less honest.
It comes as no surprise, then, that the survey shows that people believe that Republicans favor the rich over the poor or the middle class. Hence, my hesitation to subscribe to a Mitt Romney victory in November. Couple this disgust with the rich with the Republicans – not necessarily Mitt Romney, but Republicans – ideological obsession with abortion, and I feel as though Barack Obama isn’t as vulnerable as some may hope.
Oh … but about the survey, I don’t need to remind you about the figures when it comes to the rich paying taxes. The United States has the most progressive income tax system in the industrialized world, which means that the rich pay exponentially more on their taxes as they earn more. The top 1% of US taxpayers earn about 18-20% of the income but pay close to 40% of the income taxes. I wonder if these folks actually knew the figures, if they would still feel the same about the rich needing to pay more taxes.
