WELL … this is the last day of the last political convention I will cover as a radio talk show host. Who knows? Maybe I’ll try to be a delegate to the next convention from Collier County, Florida …. That is if I’m not living for a month in Paris, Vienna, Sao Palo, or Maui …. Or tooling around the Pacific Northwest in the BoortzBus.
Making our way into Radio Row this morning in Tampa turned out to be an adventure. As with every other morning, this morning they had me pop the trunk and the hood. BUT … this time they had Roscoe and Marco. German shepherds. Sniffer dogs. And let me tell you … those puppies had a field day. When that trunk opened you would have thought they had been put in a fenced-in yard with about 20 dogs in heat. They started barking, their tails wagging …. Oh my! They were having a time!
This time … not like the other days … we all had our luggage in the trunk. Belinda and Cristina are heading to the airport to return home when we get through today, and I’m driving to Orlando to do the show from the Disney Hollywood Studios tomorrow.
So … long story short … these Secret Service agents took everything out of the trunk. Went through ALL the luggage. Couldn’t find what was making the dogs so excited. In the meantime the agent standing at my window heard me talking to my Orlando affiliate, WDBO, and recognized me.
“Hey! You’re Neal Boortz!”
“Yes sir.”
“Fantastic! We listen to you all the time!”
You would have thought that would have been the end of the search. But noooooo. They still had to tear all the carpeting out of the trunk, and then inspect the spare tire.
Finally an agent asks me if the car is a rental. Yes, it is. “Well, the person who rented it before you was either transporting a large amount of drugs or explosives.” I strongly suspect that they already have acquired the rental records for the car and have some people they’ll be wanting to talk to in the near future.
And so … it’s on with the show.
