House Republicans have written a letter to Dear Ruler proposing a counteroffer in the fiscal cliff debate. I won’t bore you with the details, which you can read right here, but it boils down to: Spending cuts, entitlement reforms and, yes, $800 billion in new revenue. This revenue would not come from increases tax rates on the rich but doing away with certain loopholes, though I don’t believe they are specified.
The Republicans could come to the table with the most well-reasoned, well-researched plan ever known to man, but that won’t matter in the eyes of Barack Obama, a man possessed with the maniacal need to increase taxes on the rich. Once the Republicans come to grips with this, they will quit working so hard to reason with this man.
