Barack Obama made a speech in Miami yesterday where he laid out some of his thoughts on gas prices and energy policy. Here’s his first point: Republicans are happy to see gas prices increasing. Really? In a speech about energy policy, you are going to take the time to point fingers at the Republicans for “licking their chops” over news that could hurt our economy? That’s the Obama way of governing … deflect the attention from his failures to lead. Obama said, “Only in politics do people greet bad news so enthusiastically. Only in politics do people root for bad news.” Obama says, “And you can bet since it’s an election year, they’re already dusting off their three-point plans for $2 gas. I’ll save you the suspense: step one is drill, step two is drill, and step three is keep drilling.”

Well, Mr. Obama … drilling is a start. Instead, you seem content to fund Mexico’s efforts to drill off our shores. You also seem intent on stifling projects like the Keystone XL Pipeline, which could create jobs and make us less dependent on foreign oil. So, Mr. President … what is your plan? I know … algae! That’s it! I don’t have a sustainable plan for the immediate future, or a plan that is even a sure-bet, but we, the imperial federal government, have invested billions into alternative energy sources like algae. Even if algae is 100% successful, it would only cut our dependence by 17% but that matters not. I’ve decided it’s a good idea, therefore it is where I will choose to spend your tax dollars.

I wonder if Obama’s algae solution will be more successful than our attempt pitiful attempt at biodiesel fuel, which accounts for less than 1% of the diesel fuel market. Or how about the wild success story of ethanol! Now there’s a waste of taxpayer money if I’ve ever seen one.
