Actually .. I don’t have a lot to say about the Olympics in London. I am glad that thus far Muslims haven’t found a way to disrupt the games by killing or attempting to kill large numbers of people, as they are wont to do. But so far I’ve watched the end of one water polo game, a few minutes of beach volleyball (the women, of course) and ….. something. I’m sure I saw something else, but I can’t for the life of me remember what it was.
Oh … wait. I did see Ryan Seacrest there. Fine, he’s a great guy and from Atlanta and all, but Ryan Seacrest hosting at the Olympics? I guess that’s the push for the younger viewers. Maybe he can do the play-by-play when those ladies take to the floor to wave those ribbons around attached to the ends of sticks. We have ribbon waving in the Olympics, but not Golf?
I’m of the distorted opinion that the games of the Olympics should have some connection with skills that humans might actually use in their daily lives … especially survival skills like running, jumping and swimming. Archery, shooting, wrestling, boxing, fencing --- all related to survival skills. But waving ribbons on the ends of sticks? And about swimming … now I’m lifting these particular thoughts from a Naples Daily News columnist … but isn’t the object of swimming against the clock to go as fast as you can? Well, I used to be a competitive swimmer … and I can tell you that the Australian crawl, also called the front crawl and freestyle .. is the fastest way to go. So what’s the deal with the breast stroke, the butterfly and the backstroke? Does anyone do those things? When we run, we run. Sometimes we have to jump over things – hence the hurdles. But do we have Olympic events where we run backwards or sideways … like a crab?
Just wondering.
Opening ceremonies? Sorry … didn’t see them. I had about 600 hanging on my every word at the Daytona Beach Hilton, and wishing I would just shut the hell up and sit down.
Oh … and that Phelps guy isn’t doing all that well, is he?
