A Satisfied Electorate

I was reading the Wall Street Journal yesterday when I stumble across this final paragraph in an article about what an astounding economic success Barack Obama has been (sarcasm).

“Generally, a president seeking re-election needs a good economy and a satisfied, optimistic electorate. It's quite possible Mr. Obama's policies and governing approach will result in a one-term presidency. That answer will be based on the American people and their vision of how our government should work and the direction our nation should head.”

The author, Pete Du Pont, is absolutely right.  There may be a lot of people out there who currently view things as “good.”  These are likely the people who depend on the government for their livelihood.  For them, government will always be there to support them .. their checks will keep on coming .. so long as they have Democrats like Barack Obama in charge.  This is why Du Pont says that this election is about deciding the “vision of how our government should work.”  Should the government exist for the purpose of supporting the livelihood for millions of moochers and parasites?  Or should the government exist to protect our rights to life, liberty and property?  Considering the fact that about 50% of Americans don’t even pay any income tax any more (and that number is only going to grow), more and more people will lean toward the first option: a nation of moochers.  Government’s role as it was originally intended has morphed into a social welfare system, rather than a mechanism to protect our liberties.
