To do my job, it is kind of imperative that I stay on top of the latest news and politics. I’m a great BS artist, but it would be a disservice to my listeners if I didn’t keep up … not to mention the fact that there is so much going on, that it’s just too easy to come up with stuff to talk about based on the Bolshoi coming out of Washington.
Anyway, I am the exception, not the norm when it comes to staying plugged in to politics. But for average Americans .. not even talk radio listeners .. but average Americans seem to be tuning things out.
A new study is about to be released about civility in America. The study finds that two-thirds of Americans are tuning out political advertising, and 54% are tuning out election coverage altogether. Perhaps that is because of this: Nearly seven in 10 Americans “have lost hope that our political parties can discuss matters civilly.” Unfortunately, Americans aren’t expecting for this to change any time soon.
I understand the frustration that many people must feel, hearing each side go back and forth and nothing ever getting done. But tuning it out and sitting on the sidelines in November isn’t going to make things any better. The only way to improve on civility in America is to elect people who you believe share your vision for this country and who, hopefully, can work together. As for the ObamaMedia, the only way that you can change their behavior is by simply not watching or listening or reading their drivel, rendering them obsolete. Don’t give them the power this time around to elect our Commander-in-Chief. They managed to crown Obama their Savior and look how that worked out for us.
Some say that after the conventions – after Labor Day – more people will become energized and start to pay attention to this election. Let’s hope so. This is your children and grandchildren we’re talking about. You may think that it’s too late to bring about any change in your circumstances; but it certainly isn’t too late to try to improve the chances your children and grandchildren might have for a happy and fulfilled life in America. This stuff counts, my friends. You know that --- but you have a neighbor who pays far more attention to American Idol, and who will toss aside any newspaper or news magazine to pick up a copy of People Magazine – and you have to find a way to get through to this person to make them understand that there are more important things in our lives than who Kim Kardashian is doing right now or what she’s wearing.
Good luck with that.
Neal Boortz chronicles his 42 years of talk radio in his book "Maybe I Should Just Shut Up and Go Away" Available on line and printed from Barnes and Noble and Amazon.
