Days after Obama’s announcement on young illegal immigrants, we start to get the polling reaction. Like this one from Latino Decisions-America’s Voice: In Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Nevada and Virginia (crucial swing states), 49 percent of Latino voters said the policy made them more enthusiastic about Obama, compared to 14 percent who were less enthusiastic.
Ya think? This isn’t some sort of happy accident. Obama knows that his numbers were sliding. Both sides also recognize the untapped votes lying dormant, waiting to be wooed in the Hispanic community. Yet again, Republicans handed this one to Obama. The votes were there for the taking … even if he had to do it by stretching his executive power, possibly beyond the bounds of his constitutional authority.
Then we have the endorsement from the Hispanic Oprah (that’s what others are calling her). An influential Cuban-American talk-show host by the name of Cristina Saralegui came out in support of Obama yesterday. She says that she had to make the endorsement because there is too much at stake in this election … you got that right. Cristina explains, “I came to this country when I was 12 years old because my parents wanted to give me new opportunities to succeed.” So her choice is to support Barack Obama? That doesn’t make any rational sense to me. From the little that I know, Cristina made her success in the private sector. Barack Obama hates the private sector. Based on the fact that Cristina is successful at what she does, I assume that she is rich. Barack Obama despises the rich. And as for her not-so-rich Hispanic brethren, what on earth makes this woman believe that it is Barack Obama who will lead our country toward economic prosperity so that they, too, may have the opportunity to get jobs, work hard and become successful? Seems like another celebutwit who doesn’t really know her head from a hole in the ground.
I firmly believe that Hispanics will vote based on the economy, rather than Obama’s transparent little stunt on Friday. Immigrants are generally hard-working and truly invested in the opportunities available to them in a thriving economy. “Thriving” isn’t exactly the adjective I would use to describe Obama’s economy/recovery.
