I’m nervous about this one .. First I’m nervous that the Supreme Court might actually continue with its destruction of Constitutional principals and find ObamaCare just perfectly hunky-dory. There is a chance, however, that the Supremes might actually rule that our Constitution does not give the feds the power to force you to purchase consumer items you do not wish to purchase. If that happens, I’m sure hoping the Republicans are ready with a response.
What kind of a response? First of all, the Republicans, and this means Mitt Romney, must be prepared to assure the American people that there are going to be needed reforms to our health care system – and the regulation of health insurance companies – sooner rather than later. Romney should make it clear that this will be a primary priority for him and that he sees this as part and parcel of improving our economy. To do this Romney should say that he will bring the power of the free market to medical care. Romney and his people need to be prepared to convince the American people that there is no economic system: not communism, socialism or fascism, that can deliver needed products or services to the private sector better than the free market. Examples abound. Just look at that iPhone in your pocket. Look at that laptop that cost you just a few hundred dollars and all that it can do. Do you think for one minute an economy operating under political command could have done those things for you? No way. Step one? Allow insurance companies to sell their products across state lines. That way an insurance company that does not have to incur the costs of paying for hair transplants could do business in Connecticut – and that’s not the case right now. If a family that does not indulge in alcohol wants to buy an insurance company that does not cover alcohol abuse treatments, that family should be allowed to do so. Freeing insurance companies to operate in the free marketplace would do that.
Secondly .. Romney must be able to convince the voters that the true purpose of ObamaCare was not so much to deliver great health care to the people as it was to make the people dependent on government for that health care. It was all about creating a dependent electorate.
It’s too bad, really, that Romney doesn’t have me writing some talking points for him to use in reaction to the Court’s decision – whichever way it goes. Sorry .. but whoever is doing that job right now isn’t all that impressive.
