There’s a lot of pressure on Newt Gingrich to get out of the race. Latest polls show that 60% of Republicans want him to give up his presidential bid. That doesn’t mean that 60% of Republicans don’t like him or don’t think he would make a good president. I’ve said on many occasions that if I could pull a lever to make one of these guys president, it would be for Newt Gingrich. But dealing with the reality of the situation ... that will not be an option.
In that same poll, a majority of Republicans say that Rick Santorum should stay in the race. I disagree. If Newt drops out and Santorum stays in the race, this gives more anti-Romney leverage to Rick Santorum. Make no mistake – Mitt Romney will win the nomination, but with Rick Santorum sticking around as the anti-Romney candidate, it will make the nomination all that more ugly.
If defeating Barack Obama is your goal in November then you will urge both Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich to get out of this race.
