For the millions of otherwise unengaged voters who Obama managed to energize in 2008, Obama’s presidency must have been the ultimate let down. Many of these people never really cared about an election before. Politics wasn’t their thing. But then Barack Obama came into the picture. He was cool … almost like a celebrity, not a politician. And at least, if anything, he got many people interested in politics again who otherwise just sit on the sidelines.
After his colossal failure as president, can you blame these people for turning back toward political apathy? In other words … Barack Obama made it OK not to care again, but his subsequent failure to change anything in Washington gave Americans an excuse to simply turn a blind eye. If Obama can’t do, who could? Chronicling his failures would be useless and finding someone to replace him is equally as futile. Trying to defend his failures would take too much effort for people who are not naturally inclined toward politics. If this sort-of-a-God couldn’t manage to change things, then we must simply accept the current political climate and go on our merry ways. We will focus on the NFL and American Idol, and shun our debt and the trampling of our Constitution.
In a sense, these people are whistling passed the graveyard. They are leaving the big decision to the dwindling few people who are still willing to take the time and effort to worry about them, fight for them and do something about the problems facing our nation.
