Saturday evening I flew to Orlando where I had the privilege of speaking to a l hotel ballroom full of volunteers for Americans for Prosperity. These people had just spent a hot and muggy Orlando day going door-to-door in the House district of Democrat Alan Grayson .. not telling people whom to vote for, but making information available on some of the economic issues of the election. There they were --- for the first time in my experience – a room full of people who actually gave up a few days to gather in Central Florida to offer information to voters they need to cast an informed vote. I was truly honored – and I mean that – to have been chosen to speak to them at the end of the day. I cornered some of them individually and asked they why they were willing to give up so much of their time – many were bussed to Orlando for this project – just to make information available to people who might be hostile, indifferent or just plain unable to comprehend. The most frequent I response I received was that they were talking with friends and family when someone uttered the words “OK, fine .. but what are WE going to do about it, other than vote?”
I told these incredible people that we were fighting another revolutionary war, and they were recruits carrying the arms into battle; only this time the arms – the weapons – were information. Plus .. they weren’t going to get shot at (bit by a dog, maybe) and they knew they would be returning to their homes when their volunteering was over.
So .. AFP and the AFP volunteers .. thanks for letting me be a small part of your day in Orlando.
