My radio career started in 1966 … that’s 44 years ago … as a disk jockey on WTAW radio in Bryan/College Station, Texas.  When my talk show moved into syndication WTAW added me to their lineup.  It’s was only fitting, then, that I include WTAW on my limited “going away” tour of affiliates.  It seemed like the occasion of Texas A&M’s first SEC game against Florida would be a good time – so my friend, former UGA head coach Ray Goff and I, headed to College Station on Friday for a little celebrating and football.  We had a great reception with some WTAW listeners on Friday evening, and then Ray and I spent Saturday before and after the game tailgating with friends from Georgia and Florida.  So my heartfelt thanks to Ben Downs, the folks at WTAW and my friend Steve Miller with theTexas A&M University athletics department (where I never did deliver that commencement speech, by the way) for a fantastic weekend.

OKI .. so Florida outscored the Aggies by three points, but based on most of the reports on the game I’ve read the consensus is that A&M is ready to compete in the SEC.  I can see the BoortzBus showing up at a lot of football games … already making plans for next year in Gainesville.

By the way .. I did run into A&M President Dr. R. Bowen Loftin several times over the weekend.  Our first encounter went something like this:

“Neal, what’s the deal with this commencement speech?  I keep hearing from my faculty and alumni on that.”

“Look, I wrote it, Dr. Loftin, but I never claimed to have delivered it here or anywhere else.  I don’t know how that all got started.”

We actually laughed about it.  I may not have delivered it, but it’s certainly out there.  Oh .. and it’s about 12 years old.  Maybe I’ll give it a rewrite before I hit the road
