Well .. that’s understandable. It’s not as if Obama is truly interested in the history of this country or the particulars of the Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation. Obama is much more interesting in changing America’s path to the future than is understanding our past.
In his speech before the United Nations yesterday Obama issued a plea for the member nations to crack down on human trafficking. It might have been nice if Obama had pointed out that pretty much the only nations on earth where slavery still exists are Muslim nations ---- but he’s just that into recognizing the atrocities that exist in the Muslim world. You need to understand they’re victims. Obama also mentioned the upcoming 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s signature on the Emancipation Proclamation, saying that the proclamation said that “… all persons held as slaves would henceforth be forever free.”
Uhhhhhhh … no. It didn’t say that. Sorry if you’ve been misled in your government school or, God forbid, by your president … but the Emancipation Proclamation did not free all those held in slavery in the United States. Not even close. The truth here is that The Emancipation Proclamation only freed the slaves in those 10 states that were at war with the Union --- only the Confederate states. There were four slave states that remained loyal to the Union; Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland and Delaware, where slavery lived on. It was only later that these states ended slavery on their own or through subsequent federal action. Oh well … it’s only our country’s history. Far be it from our actual president to get it right. But it’s OK … he didn’t really live in this country until he moved here in 1979 to attend college.
