Here’s where things currently stand in Washington: Exactly where they stood before the fiscal cliff deal, only worse off for nearly every American collecting a paycheck and even worse for evil rich Americans who invest in America’s growth or create businesses.
Republicans like Mitch McConnell are stupid enough to believe that they are “finished” with the tax issue. Yeah … right. Not when you have a president with a psychotic obsession with raising taxes on the high-achievers he was raised and taught through childhood to despise. Obama’s enablers are: The aging hallow-eyed hippy from Haight-Ashbury, an ignorant electorate; and, of course, the Media Party. The fact that Republicans already gave in on tax increases didn’t make them any stronger for future negotiations, it only made them weaker. Little by little, inch-by-inch, the Democrats will chip away at the Republican resistance to tax increases. Little by little the Democrats will succeed in their quest to all but destroy economic liberty in America and complete their transformation of our country to a European-style government welfare state.
So Bob Schieffer asked Princess Pelosi about Mitch McConnell’s remark on being “finished” with taxes, and here’s how that went …
BOB SCHIEFFER: Do you then agree with the Republican leader in the Senate, Mr. McConnell, who says we’re done now with the taxing side of it, now we have to concentrate on spending? Is that done now?
PELOSI: No—
SCHIEFFER: Is the revenue side of it taken care of?
PELOSI: No, it is not. The president had said originally he wanted $1.6 trillion in revenue; he took it down to $1.2 as a compromise. In this legislation, we had $620 billion—very significant—high-end tax, changing the high-end tax rate to 39.6 percent, but that is not enough.
No kidding! The $620 billion in revenue over ten years isn’t enough to run our government for one week a year! It’s not enough and there simply will never BE enough to fund our government, not to mention the growth of our government that the Democrats would like to see happen. Remember that stat that I told you about many times: You could take all of the earnings of every hideous American earning over $250,000, all of the wealth and assets of every millionaire and billionaire and all of the profits of the top Fortune 500 companies and you would have enough money to run our federal government for about eight months. Eight months! And then once you take that money, then what?
The framework of this debate needs to change entirely. The only reason why taxes should be on the agenda is to simplify the tax code and lower taxes to encourage economic growth. The real focus needs to be on spending, particularly the type of spending that Democrats LOVE to make into a political nonstarter: entitlement spending. They will defend and scare until they are blue in the face. But if they defend and scare long enough, there won’t be a country with entitlements left to defend …… that’s the harsh reality. That’s what I mean when I say that America’s best days may be behind us. THAT will be the fiscal cliff that will truly prove fatal. Unless government-educated Americans suddenly become educated on the realities of the issue and can see past the Democrat scare-rhetoric, I don’t see how we can turn things around.
