We’ll start with this …
“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here.’ Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt and a failure of leadership.”
No, that is not Paul Ryan or John Boehner or any other member of the impotent Republican leadership. That was Barack Obama himself back in 2006. At the time, our debt was $8.6 trillion. Now, under the leadership of Barack Obama and record deficits during his first term, our national debt is nearly double that, $16.4 trillion and counting.
There was one person at the news conference that was willing to call out Obama on this blatant hypocrisy and that was Major Garrett of CBS. You can tell that Dear Ruler gets agitated and Obama’s snarky side rears its ugly head. Here’s the clip.
Dear Ruler basically dared the Republicans to try and mess with him on the issue of the debt ceiling. He says, "They will not collect a ransom in exchange for not crashing the economy.” Then he goes on to say, "The full faith and credit of the United States of America is not a bargaining chip. And they better decide quickly because time is running short." Not a bargaining chip? How about the bargain he is dealing our grandchildren by continuing to spend at such absurd levels? Obama says “to even entertain the idea of [a default] happening, of the United States of America not paying its bills, is irresponsible. It’s absurd.” I think the amount of bills that Obama has been racking up is “irresponsible” and “absurd.” I think that, yet again, scaring seniors into thinking that they won’t get their Social Security payments if the ceiling isn’t raised is absurd. He did that in 2011 and he is doing it again …
“If congressional Republicans refuse to pay America’s bills on time, Social Security checks and veterans’ benefits will be delayed. We might not be able to pay our troops or honor our contracts with small business owners. Food inspectors, air traffic controllers, specialists who track down loose nuclear materials wouldn’t get their paychecks.”
Not raising the debt ceiling DOES NOT mean that America will default. That Obama lie is as much horse squeeze now as it was then. The government takes in enough in tax receipts to cover the basic obligations and that includes Social Security. Now who is “ginning up fear”? Not raising the debt ceiling means that Obama and the congress would have to decide on some spending cuts to cover the difference … to balance the budget. In fact, not raising the debt ceiling is sort of an instant balanced budget amendment. The LAST thing a man intent on the destruction of our free-market economy would want would be a balanced budget amendment. There’s votes to buy. You need money for that. Lots of money.
Don’t worry, folks. The Republicans will cave on this one too.
